Keep On Stepping

Keep On Stepping

To get through the hardest journey we need take only one step at a time – but we must keep on stepping! (Chinese Proverb)

Today I wanted to say a couple of words about persistence.A If we want to succeed at anything in life we must persist.A The dictionary* definition of persist is 1) to continue steadfastly or obstinately despite opposition; 2) to continue without interruption.

When we make a change in our lives there will usually be opposition of some sort.A Sometimes it is from family or friends (“You can’t startAa business in the middle of a recession”) and sometimes it can be ourselves opposing the change (“I really need a cigarette!”)A To become successful in our goal, whatever it may be, we must ‘continue steadfastly despite [the] opposition’ we are coming up against.A

Don’t get distracted from your goal by other things that look enticing as this interrupts your journey to success.A If you want to start your own business, make that decision andAthen take the necessary steps in that direction.A If you want to quit smoking, again, take the necessary steps that will work for you to reach your goal.

As the Chinese Proverb above states,A we only need to take one step at a time in the direction of our goals but we must keep taking those steps.A This relates back to yesterday’s topic.A If you know where you are and where you want to get to, try and plan the steps you need to take.A You may have two steps to reach your goal or you may have a hundred (see tomorrow’s post) but you must take that first step.A

You may not know how many steps you need to take to reach your destination.A If this is the case, you just need to make sure you take the first step.A The second step will appear if you look for it.A Martin Luther King Jr said “You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”A The first step could be the act of making the decision that you are going to start your own business or quit smoking.AAOne thing is for sure, once you take that first step, you must take the next step, and then the next and keep taking stepsAuntil youAreach your destination.

Think about this one: even if you set off from London and took just one step everyday, you’d still eventually reach Edinburgh!

I wish you every success on your journey.
